Letters to Herman or Friend. Two letters while at Annapolis discussing his activities there and that many of the southern midshipmen have returned home due to the "disunion". Five letters written aboard various ships including the U.S. Vandalia, U.S. Steam Frigate Minnesota, and the frigate Wabash. Describes the ships, military action with Fort Walker and Fort Beauregard and other activity. One letter, 1872, from Julia to Herman, mentions Louis Kempff in San Francisco, still in the Navy.
